Join us at the Sands Space History Center for an evening with The Honorable Charles F. “Charlie” Bolden Jr.—Major General, U.S. Marine Corps (Ret.); four‑time Space Shuttle astronaut; and the 12th Administrator of NASA (July 17, 2009–Jan. 19, 2017). As Administrator, Bolden led NASA through the post‑Shuttle transition, championing full utilization of the International Space Station, advancing the Space Launch System and Orion programs, establishing the Space Technology Mission Directorate, and paving the way for commercial partnerships that now resupply—and again launch crew to—the ISS. His tenure also coincided with milestone science missions, including the Curiosity rover’s Mars landing and Juno’s arrival at Jupiter, along with progress toward the James Webb Space Telescope.
Before leading the agency, Bolden flew four Space Shuttle missions—piloting STS‑61C (1986) and STS‑31 (1990, Hubble deployment), and commanding STS‑45 (1992) and STS‑60 (1994, the first joint U.S.–Russian Shuttle mission)—logging over 680 hours in space. He also…
